Poll: Does your workplace do enough to make new people feel welcome?

‘Onboarding’ can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks – so where does your company stand?

WELCOMING A NEW employee is about more than just a cursory office tour or an introductory email – or at least, it should be.

New employees who take part in a structured welcome process are a massive 69 per cent more likely to remain at their company for up to three years, research by HR experts in the US found.

As a new employee here in Ireland, your ”onboarding” could take anywhere from a few minutes to a few weeks, depending on the size, scale and company culture of the workplace you’re joining.

When done correctly, the welcome process is not only beneficial to the new employee but to the wider workforce. At ESB, for example, the staff induction period is a chance to brief new arrivals on the company’s diversity and inclusion programme, among other policies.

“[A]rriving on the doorstep on day one… you’re being told that this is ESB’s commitment,” Bernie O’Connor, Diversity and Inclusion Specialist at ESB told TheJournal.ie.
